Memorial Day
Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.
Here are a few facts about this day that you may, or may not, already know.
- The exact date of its origin is hard to define, but we know for certain it was born out of our civil war.
- New York was the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1873.
- After our nations involvement in World War I, we changed from honoring those who died in the civil war to honoring those lost in all US involved wars.
- Many states observed this holiday on different dates until the National Holiday Act of 1971 observing this holiday on the last Monday in May.
- The "National Moment of Remembrance" was passed in Dec 2000 which asks that at 3pm local time, for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe, in their own way, a moment of respect & remembrance, pausing from their activities for a moment of silence or listening to "Taps"
