Debunking Myths About Self Defense: Part 2
Myth:
Fighting back always escalates the situation.
Reality:
While every situation is different, many attackers are expecting and relying on your compliance. Quick, decisive action can often surprise them and create an opportunity to escape. The key is to assess the situation and act based on your safety first.
Myth:
You should fight fair in a self-defense situation.
Reality:
There is no such thing as a "fair fight" when your safety is at risk. Eye gouges, groin strikes, and other seemingly "dirty" moves are legitimate self-defense techniques because they target areas that incapacitate attackers quickly. This is key when being threatened by someone physically larger in size or dealing with multiple threats or even weapon attacks. There are no weight classes or referees in a street fight to make sure everyone "fights fair".
Myth:
Police will arrive in time to help.
Reality:
Law enforcement often responds after a crime has occurred. While police are essential for public safety, your immediate response during an attack is critical. Learning proper defenses strategies equips you to protect yourself until help arrives. At Sanctuary we teach our members to rely on their training during a threat but also how to interact with law enforcement once they arrive or how to seek them out post attack.
Myth:
Dangerous situations happen only at night
Reality:
Crime can occur at any time. Daylight and familiar environments don't guarantee safety. Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, regardless of time or place. Long term self defense training will only increase your awareness and teach you to trust your gut when an environment or situation does not feel safe.
