When Your Child Says "I'm Not Good at This"

When Your Child Says "I'm Not Good at This"

"I can't do it."

"I'm not good at this."

"I don't want to go anymore."

Every instructor has heard these words. Every parent probably has too. Our first instinct is usually to reassure them:

"Of course you are good at it."

But there is another response that can sometimes be even more helpful.

"Not yet."

There is a big difference between saying:

"I'm not good at this." and "I'm not good at this YET."

That one word changes the entire conversation.

Kids often judge themselves based on what they can do right now.

Martial arts teaches them to think about what they can do eventually.

The first time they try something, it might look terrible. That is normal.

They practice. They make adjustments. They persevere and try again.

Eventually something clicks. And suddenly that impossible technique is not impossible anymore.

Now imagine sending your child into the real world with that mentality.

Not being good at something today does not mean they never will be.

Maybe its a math problem, a sport, making friends, public speaking, or something they have never tried before.

One of the best things we can teach kids is that being a beginner is not something to be embarrassed about.

Everyone who is good at something was once terrible at it.

At Sanctuary, we get to watch that lesson happen in real time.

And honestly, there is nothing better than seeing a child go from "I can't do this" to looking at us with a smile and saying:

"Watch me!"

Bringing you the best in martial arts, self-defense, & fitness.
