Your Child Quit Soccer. Should You Worry?
Your child joined a sport/activity. They were really excited to start. Then a few weeks, or months later "I don't want to do it anymore."
As a parent, what do you do?
Do you make them finish the season?
Do you let them quit?
Do you worry they will become someone who gives up whenever something gets difficult?
There is no universal answer.
Sometimes the environment is not right. Sometimes they are overwhelmed. And sometimes...
They just do not want to do something because it is hard.
That is where things get interesting.
There is immense value in teaching kids commitment. If they made a team commitment, there are lessons in finishing what they started.
But there is also value in recognizing that not every activity is going to be the right fit.
The goal is not to teach kids
"You can never quit."
It is to teach them
"Do not run away from something simply because you are struggling."
Those are very different messages.
Martial arts can be particularly useful here because progress is often measured over a much longer period of time.
Kids are not expected to master everything immediatley.
They learn that being frustrated does not necessarily mean they are failing.
Sometimes they just need more time.
And sometimes they discover that the thing they wanted to quit becomes something they eventually love.
As parents and instructors, our job is not always to decide for them.
Sometimes it is to help them understand why they want to quit before they make the decision.
