Should You Stay and Watch Your Child's Class?

Should You Stay and Watch Your Child's Class?

This is one of those questions where there is not a perfect answer.

Sometimes parents should stay.

Sometimes giving your child a little space can be helpful.

It depends on the child.

Some kids perform better when Mom or Dad are nearby.

Others constantly look over to see whether they are being watched.

Some kids become completely different when their parents are not in the room.

None of that means a parent is doing anything wrong.

It is simply something worth noticing.

One of the benefits of a structured activity is that children get to experience success independently.

They learn to listen to another respectful adult.

They solve little problems without immediately looking to Mom or Dad.

They make their own friends.

They handle mistakes.

They discover that they can walk into a room without their parents beside them and be okay.

For some children, that independence develops gradually.

That is perfectly normal.

Parents do not have to disappear.

But sometimes giving your child a little room to figure things out can be surprisingly valuable.

And honestly, watching from the sidelines can be pretty amazing too.

You may see them help another student, or get helped.

You may see them overcome something they have been struggling with.

You may see a little more of the person they are becoming.

 So should you stay?

If your child needs you, ABSOLUTELY!

And when they are ready for a little independence, give them the opportunity to discover what they can do on their own.
