The Importance of a Third Place for Kids Most kids have two places that shape their daily lives. Home and school. But where do kids go to develop a sense of independence outside those two environments? Sociologists often use the term “third place” to describe a setting outside home and school or work where people can gather, connect, and build relationships. For children, positive activities and community spaces can serve a similar purpose. Think about what kids experience at school. They are learning academic subjects, navigating friendships, following schedules, and meeting expectations. At home they have family responsibilities and the comfort of familiar routines. A positive extracurricular environment offers something different. It is a place where they can meet people outside their usual social circles, learn from other adults, and develop skills through shared experiences. Martial arts can provide that opportunity. Kids learn to cooperate with training partners, listen to instruction, work through challenges, and contribute to a group. They also get opportunities to interact with children of different ages and experience levels. These experiences can help them develop a stronger sense of independence and connection. And it does not always have to be martial arts. Music programs, community centers, clubs, and recreational activities can all play a valuable role. What matters is that kids have opportunities to participate in something meaningful beyond their usual daily routine. At Sanctuary Training Center, we are proud to be one of those opportunities here in Mahopac. Because a strong community is not built only through schools and families. It is also built through the places where people come together, support one another, and grow.
